Springtails

Springtails (AKA Snow Fleas) are a nuisance pest that are commonly misidentified as fleas. They are similar in size and they jump just like fleas do, however, springtails do not bite or carry diseases. Although they are small, they can easily be identified by their two long antennae.

Springtails feed on decaying organic material. They are attracted to moisture and are often found in clusters in tubs or sinks or in plant soil. Springtails found in other places like under rugs or in closets are a sign of moisture where it shouldn’t be.

Important Tips

To help keep the activity at bay…

Inspect potted plants in and around the home - dump water trays and allow soils to dry out or replace any soil with pest evidence.

Check for water damage/wood rot around the home, especially wood shake siding.

Consider replacing mulch near the home with rock or other water-resistant landscaping.

Check for plumbing leaks or faulty irrigation/drainage systems.

Treatment

  •  A general spray on the exterior of the home and interior where pests are seen will provide a quick knockdown.

  • Springtails found in bathroom or kitchen drains may be eliminated by simply treating the drain directly.

  • Granules applied on the exterior near source areas may help control outdoor populations and prevent more from entering the home.
